I talked with Susan today.  I've been in regular email contact with her, and today she wanted me to bring in either samples or completed projects for her to see.  She told me she's "been burned before" by people who claimed to know how to crochet/knit who really couldn't, so that seemed like a reasonable request.

So I bring in two afghans and a plastic canvas jigsaw puzzle thing that I've been working on.  The afghans are both actually a few years old.  The puzzle thing is a project I  made with the hospital specifically in mind.

Susan and the volunteers are utterly bowled over.  I immediately offered to let them keep one afghan, which they happily accepted.  They liked it because I'd done it in fairly "masculine" colors.  Most of the blankets they get are for infants, and thus they're done in fairly "girly" colors like pinks, lavenders, baby blues, etc.  They told me the afghan I'd done, and others I might make like it, would be especially good for the young male patients who don't want blankets in "girly" colors.  One of the volunteers then took me to talk with another chick at the hospital who apparently does some sort of social work "play therapy" type stuff with the pediatric patients they do see; she wanted me to do more of the jigsaw puzzle kits.

And I'll be reimbursed for the cost of materials.  Things are looking up :-).
