The insulin and diet change (from dry to canned food) has apparently done the trick.  Today's blood monitoring showed no evidence of diabetes, so the vet thinks it can be controlled with diet alone.

However, I'm still getting mixed signals about both that and the litterbox issue.  To wit:

1.  One litterbox per cat

2.  Two litterboxes per cat

3.  It's perfectly fine for two cats to share one box

4.  Feed them three small cans (that's per cat) per day

5.  Supplement the wet with dry, if they want it

6.  Avoid the dry food at all costs.

The mind boggles, really.
