Putting myself out there...
Apr. 10th, 2010 04:58 pmI had several very positive comments regarding the sweater and kleenex box I posted pictures of in my last entry. I bought my digital camera, and posted those pictures, because I've been thinking about trying to make and sell my craft projects online.
Pros: I can do a wide range of crocheted afghans, several types of sweaters, and almost any kind of plastic canvas project you can think of. I also do counted cross stitch.
Cons: I realized this morning that filet crochet (the kind you make doilies/tablecloths out of) is probably beyond my grasp. The magnifying lamp which I hang around my neck when I do my craft projects just doesn't give me enough magnification to see where the tiny hook needs to go, or to see whether the hook has grasped the thread. Insofar as embellishments for counted cross stitch/plastic canvas, I *cannot* do French knots. I've tried. I usually end up either leaving them out of a project, or using beads as accents instead. I also can't knit (not right now, anyway) to save my life. I'm thinking about trying to give that a go again at some point, but for now, it's not happening.
I'm considering charging the following prices for my projects:
$20-30 dollars for a finished kleenex box. The cottage tissue box, for example, uses multiple shades of yarn, many pieces of plastic canvas, and requires almost as much effort to stitch together the pieces as it takes to create the individual pieces themselves. I would charge probably $25-30 to do one of those. A standard "boutique" (square-sided) tissue box, with minimal adornment, is much easier and faster to make, so I would charge less money for it.
$40-50 for a finished sweater. It would depend on the size (child or adult), the type of sweater (pullover/cardigan), and the type of yarn.
$40-60 for a finished afghan. It would depend on how many different colors/types of yarn, the complexity of the stitching, and the size (baby/lap/full sized) of the finished project.
Those prices would be for the project itself. Shipping would be extra. I live in the United States. I'd be happy to ship to Canada/Mexico/internationally, just be aware the prices would be commensurately higher. I don't think the prices I'm asking are unreasonable, but at this point I'm basically just putting my toe in the water to see if I get any nibbles from curious fish :-)
Answer this post, or send me a private message via LJ, and if you're interested in having me try to do something for you, I'd be happy to discuss what you might have in mind.
Thanks in advance!
