As Hobbes, of the comic strip Calvin and Hobbes, once famously opined:

"Sometimes I think the only sure sign that there's intelligent life in outer space...is that none of it has tried to contact us."

I'd like to think extraterrestrial alien contact "should be actively sought out"...but if we can't coexist peacefully on *this* planet, why should we expect anything better on an intergalactic level?

Hubby went over to the Parental Units' this afternoon. He needed to pick up my wedding dress before the Maternal Unit decided to toss it out of spite--I absolutely would not have put that past her. He also took the Paternal Unit the envelope containing the info about the Sting concert. As it turns out, the tix can't be returned, but if he persists in pushing the "make up with the Maternal Unit" agenda, I'll put them up for sale on ebay when the date gets close. The Parental Units insist on promoting the fiction that the Maternal Unit "has no idea what she has/they have done".

I asked hubby today if he thought I was doing the right thing. He told me the way he sees it, I basically have three choices.

1. Pretend nothing ever happened, and welcome the Parental Units back into my life with open arms.

2. Let the Maternal Unit know that I'll start talking to her again, but under my terms/conditions.

3. Continue to keep the Parental Units at arms' length.

I've tried 1 and 2 before, with extremely limited "success", if you can even call it that. The Maternal Unit will behave like a normal human being, briefly, before her (narcissistic/borderline) personality takes over again, and I have to go through the whole mental gymnastics/emotional tapdancing bullshit all over again.

I explained all that to hubby. He understands, agrees, and is fully supportive. So, at this point the ball's pretty much in the Paternal Unit's court. He doesn't actually have the physical tickets in hand, only a computer printout of the receipt with the prices blacked out by me. So it's totally in my discretion to tell him to go piss up a rope, should it come to that (again).
