Hubby and I drove to Eagle Pass (way the hell the other side of TX from where we are, about 7-9 hrs one way by car) yesterday. We were barely ten miles from home when I heard/felt a resounding "thump", and hubby pulled over. Apparently some little old lady wasn't paying attention--we were going straight, she was turning, and she hit our right rear bumper.
Well, technically she hit Hertz's right rear bumper. Which is what made things so interesting, for the Chinese value of "interesting". First, hubby called Houston PD, and got put on hold forever only to find out that we weren't in HPD jurisdiction. Fine, so we get Montgomery County Sheriffs on the phone. Hubby tries to explain, in excruciating detail, exactly where we are, and it still took the cops about twenty mins to show up (Let me just say here that nobody was injured; I'd like to think that if fire/EMS had been needed they would have showed up faster). Then, because hubby was driving a rental, we had to get Hertz on the phone.
That's where the real fun started. Hubby had rented the car from the Hertz office closest to us. Hertz insisted the car had to be towed back to IAH. And we couldn't call our own wrecker, Hertz had to send one out.
So, by the time all was said and done, we spent 3.5 hrs dealing with the accident. We could have been halfway to Eagle Pass by that point. We'd planned on arriving in Eagle Pass at about 6-7pm; by the time we got back on the road it was after 9 when we made it to the hotel.
But, we're both in one piece, and the accident wasn't our fault, so we have nothing to worry about on that front. Thank goodness for small favors, eh?
