I think she's only half-joking when she tells us "the mother ship left her behind"...and Gram backs her up. Gram was actually the secretary to the guy who claimed the landed object was a "weather balloon".
My personal take on UFOs coincides pretty neatly with a Calvin and Hobbes one-frame cartoon I saw once. In it, Hobbes says to Calvin "Sometimes I think the only sure sign there's intelligent life in outer space...is that none of it has tried to contact us!"
